According to Autoweek F1 or Formula E could be a new sport into the Olympics. What do you think about that? What country would be the one to beat? England? Germany? Italy?

I’m reminded of the old A1 Grand Prix that ran for 5 seasons back in the early 2000s. It was so strange to hear the race called by country and not by driver. Still, I’m not crazy about the idea of auto racing in the Olympics. Yes, it’s no different than a sailboat, etc. but it just doesn’t seem right to me. I’m also old.

if they put some kind of stipulation where the cars had to be engineered by engineers from the country they are racing for, it would be awesome. After all, the car is a huge part of the overall performance. I would love it if they did this, and it was formula e. I think the U.S. would be the country to beat, then Germany. I have my doubts about any other country having a decent presence early on. Maybe Japan.

Exactly! Doesn’t the Olympics forbid any technology that gives an unfair advantage? So without reading the Autoweek article, my guess would be that all cars would have to be the same.

Isn’t that what the FIA is ultimately going for?

You mean like Formula E was this year?

Well considering all of the cars are currently built in England, I have a feeling that they’d certainly have a leg up.

At least you could at least make a fairly safe bet that a lot of folks working in F1 car production sheds in the English countryside might be offered jobs in different countries. haha

Two words, Olympic Karting. World Class drivers fighting on Karts = Damn good show.

That would be a great show! I am just wondering if more speed would be a better thing, how fast can those carts go? 100 mph?

Honestly, with proper gearing these Karts go 80+. The smaller Karts allow the host nation a more convenient venue and ensures an equal competition at a low cost. To be honest, making them go any faster could end up being a major safety concern. Which, in turn, may keep top drivers, especially those bound by lucrative contracts, from competing.

this is actually not a bad idea.

olympic teams scrounge for money to feed their athletes, i dont think a 100million dollar racing car program is feasible.

a 10,000 kart? sure. the rowing shells cost in the $20-30k range. how much does a kart even cost?

I’m not sure how that would work since F1 is more of a team sport. Unless you have the drivers compete in the same car for medals although that would not be F1 anymore. The only way I see it working is if they have a racetrack around the Olympic village every 2 years (1 winter and 1 summer olympics) as a side-attraction for the Olympic viewers. The winter one would be cool though.

I’m for motorsports in the Olympics, but I wouldn’t choose F1. Formula E would go well with the green image that’s popular these days. Some form of rally stage/hillclimb-type competition (yes, I went there) would work well because it’s easier to find/create a course, and by doing something like using M-Sport R2 Fiestas across the board any kind of vehicular advantage would be removed. Honestly though, I’d expect bikes to make it into the Olympics before cars. They’re far more physical of a challenge (especially motocross), and with their reduced size it’s easier to set up a course for them in a smaller area (depending on the kind of bike anyway). Hell, put trials in the Olympics. Very physical, very intellectual (route planning, etc), and can be done in the space of a stadium.

I don’t think it’s a good idea. It would be insanely expensive, as teams would have to be solely from each country (Advantage, UK) and millions if not billions of dollars would have to spent to participate, essentially ruling out all but the richest countries. Furthermore, and I know it’s already done to some extent, depending on the city where the summer olympics are to be held, a race track would have to be built. I’d love to promote racing and have more tracks in more places, but look at what has happened to the facilities in Beijing, Athens, etc... after the Olympics are done??

Plus, I don’t think any form of motorsport should be in the olympics. It should be sports that really highlight athletic feats, and while drivers, especially in F1, are absolutely athletes the fact that the car is responsible for so much overshadows the athleticism a bit too much for me.

Tl;Dr - too expensive and not in the spirit of the Games.

Hell, put trials in the Olympics.

Pedal trials would be the likeliest.
